Understanding The Different Styles Of Identity Theft

October 17th, 2010

You are at risk of identity theft, most likely, right now. One of the worst types of identity theft is also one of the more common types – because people aren’t careful with their social security number. Never, ever carry your social security card in your purse or wallet.

What about documents with your social security number on them? Do you shred all of them as soon as you don’t need them? Most people don’t but they should.

Right now, I bet, that there are papers with this information on them in my garbage. If someone gets your social security number, they can rack up a huge amount of debt – all in your name.

If you figure it won’t happen to you because that’s a lot of work for a scammer, think again. Here’s an experiment. Call the phone company. Ask them what is required to open up a new service account. Chances are they will say they need a name, an address, a social security number, and a birthday.

Scammers can call up and tell people that they won a fantastic prize, and that all they need to do to claim the prize is verify their social security number, and many people will provide this information right over the phone to a complete stranger! They get excited, and they quit thinking about security.

For name and birthday, that’s easy. Most people will just tell you this info if you ask them. Now this same scammer would have enough to call up the phone company and order all of the top services and equipment and options, all in your name, and you would end up getting stuck with the bill. You’re probably thinking, but they would get arrested! Well, they could, but usually they don’t stick around in any one place all that long. They’ll be on to the next scam by the time you realize your identity is stolen and call the authorities.

Some identity thieves who are very intelligent and motivated can even cobble together entire identities for use by illegal immigrants. An illegal immigrant with your information can use it to cross the border, get a job, get a place to live, turn on utilities, and so on. All of this would happen in your name, and on your credit record.

There can be devastating results. Sometimes people don’t realize for months or even years that there is someone out there pretending to be them and opening accounts and purchasing things. Imagine if the IRS demands payment of taxes for capital gains from selling the three houses you own – only you don’t even own one! That’s a nightmare scenario you really don’t want to have to deal with.

How To Select Self Storage

September 15th, 2010

Many people use Self Storage to house their items and choosing the correct unit is an important decision. Where the unit is located, how much the rent is and the amenities the unit offers are all factors to consider. Since there are many options available today, it pays to do some research before making a commitment.

The use of the rented space is a prime consideration. Some folks rent space to store family heirlooms that are too bulky to display in their homes, but too sentimental to sell. Other space is utilized when a family is in transit and has moved out of one abode, but is not yet ready to move into another. Some spaces are rented by businesses for paper file storage that is too bulky for the office, but they are required by law to retain for a certain number of years.

People differ on how often they need to access their personal storage space. This fact helps narrow down the decision about how close the unit should be to your home. If you need easy and constant access, then geographic proximity may be a high priority. If you find only infrequent need to open it, then it could be farther away.

Facilities differ on the amenities and the level of security they offer. Some are one hundred percent self service. Others have staff on sight, even at night, and closed circuit cameras. Some units offer climate control. Others do not. What level of service you choose, depends on the level of service you require and the financial commitment you wish to make.

If you intend to keep the unit rented for a significant period of time, you may be able to negotiate a discount on the rent. Of course, some people will only need extra space for a brief time. However, it might pay to enquire about any discounts that may be available for the length of time you anticipate needing storage.

Part of the process to think about early is the actual moving of the items for storage. When you visit different facilities, notice if there is room to park a moving truck or will you be required to haul your storage items over a long distance. It is good to know in advance if hand trucks are available to borrow or rent. Also, make sure to schedule your move during hours the facility is open if it is not accessible twenty four hours.

After considering location, price and amenities, you should be able to select a storage unit that will satisfy all your requirements. If you have any questions, it may be a good idea to consult a professional and get their advice.

Insurance Deals Regarding Teenagers

August 7th, 2010

Statistics have shown that teenagers are more likely to be involved in car accidents than their adult counterparts. This is usually down to the teenagers making errors of judgment when driving. Teenagers are also more likely to exceed the speed limits more than adults too.

It is facts like these that have driven the cost of insurance policies that involve the addition of a teenager through the roof so to speak.

It is thought that the average family insurance policy can range between $1,600 and $1,800 each year. This shows an increase in cost from other years and this can vary according to which state you live in.

The sad thing is that when you decide to add a teenager onto this policy you will definitely se the cost increase. The amount of the increase can be as little as 50% or as high as 200% of the original cost of the policy.

This is mainly due to the fact that insurance companies class teenagers in the high risk bracket when it comes to drivers. Just one look at the figures tells you why this is the case. But there are certain ways in which you could get some decent discounts for teenage rivers.

Insurance companies will give discounts to teenagers that they believe to be responsible and careful when driving. The teenager that fits this bill is the one with good high school grades. So if you have a teenager that is doing well at school you should check to see if you are eligible for these discounts.

You could also enroll the teenager in the traffic school. By doing this they will learn to abide by the traffic rules and as a result they should not be in the position to get any tickets issue to them. As we all know ticket will push the insurance premiums up.

Finally you could make sure that the car they choose is not a flashy sports car but a practical car. Insurance companies look at sports cars as enticing the teenagers to go faster and that will also push up the insurance premiums.

Understanding Driving Under The Influence And The Examinations Needed To Be Conducted For Someone Under It

July 17th, 2010

When you drive a motor vehicle after having drunk alcohol or taken drugs, you are said to be DUI, or Driving Under the Influence. It is illegal to be driving if you have a certain level of alcohol in your bloodstream as it is dangerous for everyone on the road, yourself included.

California has laws against DUI. You cannot drive if you are under the influence of either drugs or alcohol. This law also extends to piloting planes or boats as well. You can get DUI for being drunk and piloting your boat down a waterway. It’s important to have such laws. Imagine how many lives would be at risk if there was an intoxicated pilot!

Here is why we have DUI laws. Under normal circumstances, it is possible for a person to perform more than one simple task at a time with relative ease. In other words, you can press your brake and not lose the ability to effectively steer. Your ability to do even two things at once drops considerably when your blood alcohol goes up to 0.02%. When the BAC of a driver hits 0.08%, impairment is so severe that a driver is incapable of maneuvering a car safely.

That is why California instituted a law in 1990 that makes it illegal to drive with a BAC of 0.08% or more. If you are in California, and you are found to have driven with a BAC of this much or more, you will be arrested and charged with DUI.

Many other states in the US have followed this same BAC guideline. In these states, law enforcement officers are taught to gauge who is likely intoxicated.

Officers manage this by conducting what are called field sobriety tests (FST). These tests can measure a person’s agility and reflexes, and thus estimate their ability to drive safely. You can’t tell what a BAC is by FST, however.

To accurately test BAC, you need to conduct a chemical test. The most accurate way is via blood or urine sample, although measuring alcohol in the breath will also work. The breath measurement tool is the most widely known, and is called the Breathalyzer.

Criminalizing DUI has saved many lives. Since the 0.08% BAC law, DUI fatalities have dropped considerably.

Security Deposits – The Advantages Of Requiring Them When Subletting Your Home

July 2nd, 2010

You should always get a security deposit when you are letting a place as it acts as your insurance policy. The deposit is taken at the outset and is kept by the property owner or an agency until the end of the lease.

Before the deposit is given back to the moving out tenant, the apartment is inspected for any damage or cleanliness issues. A portion of the deposit, or all of it, will go directly to fixing and repairing these damages.

If a renter will be subletting an apartment, it is important to increase the deposit amount in case of unforeseen issues arising from the other renters.

Naturally, you can take them to court to pay for the damages. This is much more tricky than holding a deposit though.

At the outset of the lease, all parties should look around the place and fill in a comprehensive form detailing the condition of it. Any anomalies should be noted at the beginning so they don’t cause problems later on.

The landlord should have photos taken before subletting the property as a record of its initial condition. When the tenant moves out, this process should be repeated so that there is no question as to how the initial condition of the property compares to its final condition.

During the process of initiating a deposit the property owner needs to be aware of all the legal requirements. These will depend on which state you live in so make sure you know what your responsibilities and rights are from the start.

Undoubtedly, there are restrictions as to when a landlord can keep the deposit or when a tenant can request a refund. Ensure both parties understand these terms and conditions, and make sure you check with the city’s guidelines too, since every city is different than the other.

The Rationale To Possess Homeowners Insurance

June 28th, 2010

It is very important for anyone who owns a home to have homeowners insurance. Without homeowner’s insurance, any damages for natural disasters, fires or theft would have to be paid out-of-pocket, which could be quite expensive. For those who have a mortgage on their home, the lender will actually require homeowner’s insurance to be carried on the house.

You need to be careful when getting insurance as there are many different types and some do not offer as much cover as you may think. Some things, such as specific acts of nature, are not covered by some types of insurance.

For the reason detailed above, you need to understand an agreement before purchasing it. It is essential that you ask any questions that are on your mind. If you do not do these two steps, you are setting yourself up for an unpleasant surprise.

Usually, there are a number of different types of policy areas that will give you total coverage. You will get one that will cover the actual house and the land it is on, which will provide for any damage to those.

Another area is one that covers criminal actions. You need to be totally aware of what this entails as often these types of policy do not provide you with enough to re-buy everything but rather only give you a certain percentage of the stolen goods value.

Furthermore, you will have protection if someone is hurt within your home. For example, if someone slipped on ice while walking to the front door, the insurance policy would most likely cover the medical expenses. In addition, you may receive money to repair your home if it becomes too inadequate to live in.

Shopping for insurance can sometimes be confusing. It is always a good idea to shop around and get several quotes for homeowner’s insurance, because prices for policies do vary.

If you do this, you have more chance of getting the right price and cover. Also, there are quite a few things that you can do to get the lowest rate possible so ask your insurer what they can offer.

The Motivation For Getting Insurance As A House Or Apartment Renter

May 31st, 2010

People who rent sometimes make the mistake of assuming that they don’t need to get house insurance anymore. In reality, they need to have home renter’s insurance, as their landlord’s insurance policy will only cover the structure of the house or apartment building and the land where it is built on.

Of course, this means that any items within the home are not insured by the landlord, and the renter needs to get them insured. By getting home renter’s insurance, all of the items within your apartment will be protected from loss and damage which can include fire, flood, or theft.

Personal property includes furniture, clothes, jewelry, gadgets and appliances. One should not also forget the home entertainment system and computer. Items that can be carted off easily by thieves like one’s laptop and iPod are covered as well.

You would be surprised at how much everything is worth when you total it all up. Often we do not imagine what would happen if we lost everything. You probably are not able to buy everything you would need back. By getting the appropriate insurance you will be able to get it all back.

There is quite a large different array of situations that may be covered by home renter’s insurance. These depend on the area you live in, but some common ones include fire, smoke, earthquake, theft, or even lightning.

When they are assessing a claim, the insurance company will give you enough money to replace the items with new ones, not second hand items. This means that you will actually come out with newer possessions.

The insurance will actually even cover the medical expenses or defense expenses if you are sued from someone being in your apartment and getting hurt.

As a home renter, you can never be too careful when handling the important matters relating to your living situation. The more you can protect yourself and your belongings, the more peace of mind you will have.

Caravan Lovers Need Not Concern Themselves With Volcanoes

May 26th, 2010

This Easter saw caravan holidays rise to the status of “most convenient” after the eruption of the Icelandic volcano saw most aeroplanes around the world either completely grounded or at least disrupted.

It was truly a great feeling, pulling my caravan home whilst air-traffic had ground to a halt and not even having to concern myself with whether or not my insurance covered volcanic eruptions covered happening in a distant country. It suddenly feels as if caravan lovers everywhere have been vindicated. Next time someone says something along the lines of “cars towing caravans are slow and only get in the way” you could remind them that there was a period around Easter 2010 in which a caravan could get from anywhere in Europe to almost anywhere else in Europe faster than the average plane.

In addition, those conditions that some refer to as tight and claustrophobic in caravans were positively opulent by comparison to hotel lobbies, airport floors and cramped coaches.

This is all, of course irrelevant within the caravan community; we like our holidays and you like yours. How tedious would the world be if we all liked the same things? However the reason for the somewhat smug nature of this article is that those who are not into caravanning often tend to poke fun at our choice of holiday, while we rarely, if ever, do the same to them.

So, although I didn’t incur any of the costs and inconveniences that the aeroplane fan-club did this Easter, I did have some additional costs, and not the kind that you can insure against either.

I took the a copy of Caravan Magazine with me on my holiday because we were thinking about buying a new one, and so had intended to browse over potential new purchases, but I ended up becoming engrossed in the insurance survey. It seems that because I never went to a broker to get my caravan insurance, I over paid for it – by a considerable amount. So if you’re in need of cheap caravan insurance it is well worth shopping around because there were lots of price comparisons in Caravan Magazine, some of which were quite surprising and are well worth a look into.
