The Legal System – Reality Vs. Television
If you watch much television, or go to movies on a regular basis, odds are good that you have seen a courtroom drama played out on the screen. You might watch shows where the main characters are lawyers, and feel that you have a good understanding of what really goes on in the legal profession. You might be surprised at how wrong you could be. What you see on television and in the movies is called entertainment for a reason. While it might have a basis in fact, how it is actually portrayed may not be very close to reality at all.
Now you might be thinking that your perception of how the law works isn’t that relevant to your or your particular legal needs. However, your perceptions could play a major role. Most people have seen countless film and television portrayals of the legal process, courtroom battles and lawyers in action. Thus, when it comes time to deal with real legal professionals in real legal situations, your perceptions and expectations may be out of step with the reality of the situation.
The end result is that this could cloud your decision-making and ultimately whether or not you find justice in your case. In a word, it is in your best interest to ignore, as much as possible, your preconceived notions about how the legal system works. Once you begin working with lawyers and see the legal system up close, you will quickly realize that the reality differs greatly from the perception. This is true whether you are dealing with disability attorneys or personal injury attorneys.
Navigating the legal system is touch enough without incorporating ideas and notions that you may have gleaned from mainstream media about how it functions. The bottom line is that the legal world and real law differs dramatically from the portrayals that you likely have seen. One example of a real world implication of following this artificial version of the law is as follows. You might pass on a great lawyer simply because he or she doesn’t fit the image that you have in your mind of what a lawyer should be or should act like.
Don’t let such a small mistake impact your case and your chances for judgment. As with almost every other aspect of our society, you can’t trust what you see on television.
